Today: International Day Against Nuclear Tests

Today marks the International Day Against Nuclear Tests.  On 2 December 2009, the United Nations General Assembly declared 29 August the International Day against Nuclear Tests which is meant for all sectors of society to come together to 'inform, educate, and advocate' for the banning of nuclear tests.

The Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) was one important milestone towards a nuclear-free world. The Nobel Women's Initiative calls on China, the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Pakistan, and the United States to sign the CTBT for it to enter into force.

The Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) was opened for signatures on 24 September 1996 and has been signed by 182 countries and 154 have ratified it. However, the CTBT requires the signatures of all 44 states in possession of nuclear technology to enter into force. Use this day to spread awareness around the dangers of nuclear testing and call on your government to sign and ratify the treaty.
