Authorities Detain Activist Maryam Bahrman – Iran
Iranian Intelligence Officials continue to hold women’s rights defender Maryam Bahrman in prison under interrogation – despite an order for her release from other government officials. Bahrman was arrested on 11 May 2011 for charges relating to her women’s rights activities – including her membership in the “One Million Signatures Campaign” calling for legal equality in Iran.
The main allegation against her is “action against national security” – for her participation in the 55th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in March 2011. Bahrman is among several female activists detained in recent weeks – including photographer Maryam Madj, filmmaker Mahnaz Mohammadi, and journalist Zahra Yazdani.
The Nobel Women's Initiative supports the calls for Bahrman and other human rights’ defenders immediate release – and concrete action to guarantee a safe space for Iranian women activists.
