Outcry over Boycott Law – Israel
A controversial new law passed on Monday despite concerted efforts by human rights and pro-peace groups to block it. The ‘Anti- Boycott’ law prohibits the boycott of businesses, universities, social and cultural institutions based in Israel and the illegal settlements.
Under the law any individuals, organizations, and businesses that participate in boycotts may be sued and penalized with financial sanctions. More than 50 Israeli civil society organizations have signed a petition against the undemocratic law – condemning it as a mortal blow to freedom of speech. Several groups have announced that they will challenge the law in the High Court.
