Authorities Detain Activist Maryam Bahrman – Iran

Iranian Intelligence Officials continue to hold women’s rights defender Maryam Bahrman in prison under interrogation – despite an order for her release from other government officials. Bahrman was arrested on 11 May 2011 for charges relating to her women’s rights activities – including her membership in the “One Million Signatures Campaign” calling for legal equality in Iran.

Ivorian Women Killed for Protesting Post-Election Violence

Amid the struggle for power over the disputed results of Ivory Coast's most recent elections, Ivorian women have been targeted for demanding an end to the violence. 

Protesting the chaos that has overtaken the Ivory Coast since last November's contested elections, thousands of women took to the streets last Thursday to express their desire for peace. The protest ended with Laurent Gbagbo's Republican Guard opening fire on the protestors, killing at least six women.

Urge Governments to Support Special Mandate on Iran

Join us in standing in solidarity with the women human rights defenders in Iran by supporting theiiran_women_credit_Reutersr campaign for a Human Rights Council resolution establishing a UN special mandate on Iran.

On 17 March 2011, a resolution will be tabled at the 16th session of the Human Rights Council to establish a UN special mandate with an independent rapporteur for Iran. A UN special mandate would expose human rights abuse in Iran. Several countries are already co-sponsoring the resolution but more support is needed to reach majority vote.

Take action now and urge your governments to vote for and co-sponsor the resolution. Write to your Foreign Ministry sending a clear message that the international community does not accept human rights violations against the Iranian people.

Ebadi Urges Action for a Just Trial for Sotoudeh

Ebadi_NasrinNobel Laureate Shirin Ebadi is urging the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to take whatever action is necessary to obtain access to a just trial for Iranian human rights defender Nasrin Sotoudeh.

In an open letter to the UN High Commissioner Navanethem Pillay, Ebadi wrote, “Mrs. Sotoudeh's release will only be possible if she is given a just trial. Access to this inalienable right will not be possible without international support."

Iran Gives Human Rights Defender 11-year Jail Sentence

nasrinAn Iranian judge sentenced leading human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh on Sunday to 11 years in jail.  She is also being banned from practicing law and traveling for 20 years.

Sotoudeh--whose clients have included Nobel Peace Laureate Shirin Ebadi--was charged for "acting against national security", not wearing Islamic dress during a videotaped message and also for "propaganda" against the regime.

Nasrin Sotoudeh, the imprisoned Iranian human rights lawyer and colleague of Shirin Ebadi is on a hunger strike, refusing to drink even water. She is protesting  her situation in prison and her lack of legal rights by Iranian officials.

Shirin Ebadi, United for Iran, and other human rights organizations are encouraging all to sign an e-letter demanding world leaders to take immediate action to save the life of Nasrin Sotoudeh.

Iranian Officials Arrest Human Rights Defender

On September 4th, Iranian Officials arbitrarily arrested human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh. A few days before her arrest, Sotoudeh had given the International Campaign for Human Rights information she witnessed about investigations made by tax officials on several human rights lawyers in Iran.

According to Nobel Laureate Shirin Ebadi, Sotoudeh's arrest is symptomatic of the corruption of the Iranian judicial system. "Sotoudeh's arrest is because she has taken on the defense of political prisoners and human rights activists," said Ebadi, "Unfortunately, the Iranian judiciary has long lost its independence and become a tool in the hands of security forces.

Iran marks election anniversary with more arrests

UPDATE: Narges Mohammadi was released from Evin prison on July 1 after three weeks in detention. She fell ill while in prison and was hospitalized on July 3. Read more.

Iranian authorities arrested human rights defender Narges Mohammadi in her home on June 10 in an attempt to stop the work of the Defenders of Human Rights Centre. Mohammadi is the Vice President of the independent organization founded by Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi.

The arrest came on the eve of the one-year anniversary of the disputed June 12 election. Since returning to power, Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has continued to suppress political opposition with extreme violence and repression.

Iran must release all journalists and political prisoners

Jhila_BaniyaghoubMeet Jila Baniyaghoub. She is a veteran journalist, editor-in-chief of the website Women in Iran and a member of the One Million Signatures Campaign.

Iranian authorities have imprisoned Baniyaghoub numerous times for her reporting on peaceful demonstrations and human rights. This week, the Iranian government sentenced her to a one-year prison term and a thirty-year ban from journalistic activities.

She is not alone. Since last year's elections, Iran has arrested at least 170 journalists and bloggers--including 32 women. On the anniversary of last years election this Saturday, June 12, join the voices in Iran and around the world calling for the release of Jila Baniyaghoub. She--and the 2,500 political prisoners in Iran--should be free.

Iran drops Human Rights Council bid; seizes Commission on the Status of Women nod

Shirin_podiumIran has dropped its bid for a seat on the UN Human Rights Council amidst strong global criticism. This opposition has been driven by Iranian and global human rights activists, including Nobel Peace Laureate Shirin Ebadi. In an open letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and Members of the UN General Assembly, Ebadi outlined the Islamic Republic of Iran's egregious and constant breaches of international law and international covenants that it has signed onto.

Iranian women's rights campaign wins freedom of expression award

Million_Sigs_1103-women-of-iran_awThe Change for Equality website has been awarded Reporters Without  Borders first-ever "Netizen Prize". Change for Equality is run by Iranian women's rights activists and promotes the One Million Signatures Campaign. The award was presented to one of the founders of the website, Parvin Ardalan, on March 11 by Reporters Without Borders and Google in Paris.

Iranian authorities blocked the website the next day, March 12, which happens to be World Day Against Cyber-Censorship. This is the 23rd time that Change for Equality has been shut down since it was launched in 2006.

Iranian Government continues attempts to silence activists

Many of the detainees are women, who seemingly vanish into Iranian prisons without a trace. The security and intelligence forces justify their actions using a blanket detention order, which gives agents the license to arrest anyone at will.

United for Iran Global Day of Action

Following the renewed demonstrations, detentions and abuse of human rights in Iran, United for Iran is calling on the international community to engage in a global day of action for democracy, freedom, and human rights in Iran, on Saturday, July 25th.  Cities around the world will host rallies in support of the Iranian people and in condemnation of human rights abuses by Iranian authorities.

Nobel Peace Laureate, Shirin Ebadi one of the sponsors of the event and is also calling upon the international community for support.  The initiative is also supported by Physicians for Human Rights and PeaceJam.

"If one country sincerely wants to support democracy in another country that is under dictatorial rule, the only thing to do is to support the freedom fighters who stand for the democratic institutions of that country. Done this way, the sapling of democracy will bear the flower of freedom.” – Shirin Ebadi, Iranian human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner.

Call On Iranian Authorities to Protect Human Rights

Over the last two weeks, the Iranian authorities have been criminalizing peaceful protest and taking violent actions against its citizens.   Gross human rights violations, arbitrary arrests, and extreme violence have been occuring daily.

Sign a petition to  the Organization of Islamic Conference, the Non-Aligned Movement, and all UN member states through Avaaz.
